Tour Clover Valley Farm’s orchards demonstrating a range of apple production methods including high density (trellised) and semi-dwarf apple blocks using 2 semi-dwarf and 5 high density root stock and more than a dozen varieties intended to assess options for commercial apple production along the North Shore of MN. Learn more about the achievements of the 3-year project, including the locations, numbers and descriptions of the orchards, rootstock, apple varieties established from Wrenshall to Grand Marais. Meet “Gitchee Gummi Golden” a historic, locally-adapted apple varieties identified using genetic sampling of heritage apple trees conducted by Dr. Briana Gross, University of MN Duluth, Check out our new timber frame building that will serve as clean dry storage for our apple/fruit production and processing equipment and a root cellar that will be used to short-term storage of apples and overwintering of grafted fruit trees and other farm crops.

Directions: From Duluth, head up the North Shore expressway Hwy 61 14 miles to St. Louis Co. 42 (Homestead Road). Turn left (away from Lake Superior) and go 4.2 miles to Clover Valley Farms on the right. Parking on Homestead Road will be necessary, watch for the “MDA Field Day” signs.
